GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Stannous octoate acts as an efficient catalyst mainly for the gelling reaction during the generation of polyester polyurethane foams & elastomers. Due to an interaction with the simultaneously applied amines it influences the blowing reaction to a certain extent.

For this reason the optimal use level depends on formulation details, like reactivity of polyol, type of amine, type and amount of blowing agent and the desired rise time.

Indications of catalysis out of balance are tight foam with bad porosity if the applied amount of stannous octoate is on the high side, and lots of tiny internal tissues combined with superior air flow, but a completely inferior tear strength if the chosen level is too low.

Caused by it’s chemical nature, stannous octoate is sensitive to oxygen and humidity. To provide optimal stability stannous octoate is protected twice. It contains internally a stabilizing agent and it is filled in under a protective atmosphere of dry nitrogen. The outstanding storage stability of stannous octoate is attained by these provisions combined with a special procedure which avoid any impurities, which might have any negative influence on storage stability or could lower the catalytic activity. But if a container is once opened the content should be used up continuously without any long breaks.

The tertiary amines which have to be applied to achieve a well-balanced catalysts attack the stannous octoate chemically and destroy it’s catalytic efficiency within a very short time. It is advisable to take care by organizational means that unintentional cross contamination , like eg. by back pouring of leftovers, is safely avoided.
